Registered Nurse (RN) – PACU

Job Summary

The Registered Professional Nurse (RN) – PACU is responsible for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating all nursing care in accordance with the New York State Nursing Practice Act. This role focuses on delivering high-quality care to peri-anesthesia patients through systematic assessment, individualized care planning, and implementation to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

The PACU RN provides care during the immediate post-anesthesia (Phase I) period and facilitates safe transition to Phase II recovery, inpatient units, ICU, or discharge. This role requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to address patient and family needs across the lifespan, from pediatric to geriatric populations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Provide comprehensive nursing care to post-anesthesia and post-procedure patients in PACU.
2. Perform initial and ongoing patient assessments, documenting physical, psychosocial, and behavioral status.
3. Monitor and evaluate patient conditions, comparing current status to baseline and expected outcomes.
4. Develop and implement individualized care plans to support recovery from anesthesia.
5. Monitor surgical sites, drains, dressings, IV lines, and other medical devices.
6. Maintain respiratory and circulatory function, intervening as needed.
7. Administer medications and evaluate patient responses, including pain management.
8. Identify and respond to emergency situations using critical thinking and clinical judgment.
9. Collaborate with physicians and healthcare team members to coordinate patient care.
10. Educate patients and families on post-procedure care and discharge instructions.
11. Ensure adherence to infection control protocols and established standards of care.
12. Document all care, assessments, and patient progress accurately and timely.
13. Advocate for patients and communicate any incidents or unusual occurrences appropriately.

Required Qualifications

1. Minimum of two (2) years of critical care nursing experience.
2. Strong clinical skills in patient assessment, monitoring, and intervention.
3. Experience with post-anesthesia care, ventilatory support, and hemodynamic monitoring preferred.
4. Ability to respond effectively in high-acuity and emergency situations.
5. Excellent communication, documentation, and teamwork skills.

Schedule:

1. Full-time, 5x8 day shifts (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)

Education

1. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required

Certifications & Licensure

1. Active New York State Registered Nurse (RN) License
2. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
3. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
4. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
