Job Summary
The Nurse Manager – Emergency Department is responsible for the 24-hour oversight of patient care delivery, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical services within the department. This role provides leadership, direction, and accountability for all Emergency Department operations while fostering a collaborative, respectful environment among multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
The Nurse Manager ensures high-quality, patient-centered care, supports performance improvement initiatives, and maintains operational efficiency. Weekend and holiday coverage is required as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Develop and manage long-term staffing plans to ensure appropriate daily coverage.
- Monitor and manage operational performance metrics including agency usage, overtime, vacancies, and turnover.
- Oversee daily workflow, staffing, onboarding, training, and professional development of staff.
- Lead quality and performance improvement initiatives within the Emergency Department.
- Monitor patient volume, staff performance, and quality indicators to identify improvement opportunities.
- Maintain departmental dashboards tracking service, quality, people, and leadership metrics.
- Investigate and resolve patient, physician, and staff concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Promote a collaborative, respectful team environment.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
Clinical Practice & Patient Care
- Collaborate with nursing leadership to establish and uphold clinical care standards.
- Ensure staff adherence to protocols and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and patient-centered care environment.
- Promote equitable access to care for all patient populations.
- Stay current with clinical and healthcare management best practices.
Management & Staff Engagement
- Participate in strategic planning for Emergency Department services.
- Conduct regular staff meetings to review performance metrics, goals, and departmental updates.
- Support a culture of accountability, communication, and continuous improvement.
Human Resources & Staff Development
- Educate, mentor, and evaluate staff performance.
- Partner with HR and leadership on employee relations, including counseling and disciplinary actions.
- Lead training initiatives related to clinical practices and systems (e.g., EPIC).
- Foster a professional environment built on respect, collaboration, and excellence.
Requirements
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of nursing leadership experience in an Emergency Department setting.
- Minimum 1 year of EPIC experience required.
Education
- Master’s Degree in Nursing required.
Licensure & Certifications
- Active New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications required.
Preferred
- TNCC certification.
Schedule
- Shift - 3:00pm - 11:00pm
