Registered Nurse - Critical Care Unit (CCU)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate Critical Care Registered Nurse (RN) to provide high-quality nursing care to adult ICU and telemetry patients. The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating, coordinating, and delivering nursing care in accordance with the New York State Nursing Practice Act, professional nursing standards, facility policies, and established standards of care.

Critical Care nursing focuses on helping critically ill patients achieve their optimal health potential through comprehensive assessment, clinical judgment, care planning, intervention, evaluation, patient advocacy, and collaboration with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

This RN will provide care to medical and surgical critical care and telemetry patients ages 18 and older. The ideal candidate is clinically strong, calm under pressure, highly organized, and comfortable responding to urgent and emergent patient needs, including Code Blue and medical alert situations.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment and Care Planning

1. Conduct thorough nursing assessments of patients’ physical, social, behavioral, and mental health status through direct observation, patient and family interviews, and medical-record review.
2. Gather and evaluate relevant patient history, current clinical data, provider documentation, diagnostic results, physical-exam findings, mental-status information, and reports from other members of the healthcare team.
3. Assess mobility, sensory deficits, use of prostheses, skin integrity, psychosocial and environmental factors, educational level, and learning needs.
4. Identify actual and potential medical, surgical, psychological, and medication-related concerns.
5. Document complete, accurate, timely nursing assessments and patient-care interventions in accordance with facility requirements.
6. Develop individualized nursing plans of care based on acute medical/surgical diagnoses, presenting symptoms, patient condition, and expected outcomes.
7. Identify patient and family education needs and incorporate them into the plan of care.
8. Make appropriate referrals to physicians, case managers, social workers, therapists, and other interdisciplinary team members, and document referrals accordingly.

Clinical Care and Intervention

1. Provide comprehensive nursing care to critically ill ICU and telemetry patients with medical and surgical diagnoses.
2. Monitor patients closely, recognize changes in condition, identify symptoms, and communicate significant findings promptly to the appropriate provider and care team.
3. Administer medications, treatments, and therapies safely and accurately in accordance with physician orders, nursing standards, and facility policy.
4. Apply critical-thinking and clinical-decision-making skills to assess patient needs and implement appropriate interventions.
5. Respond to Code Blue events, medical alerts, and other critical emergencies as assigned.
6. Provide crisis intervention and appropriate nursing care during medical, surgical, and critical-care emergencies.
7. Manage and support treatment modalities relevant to critical care and telemetry patient populations.
8. Follow all infection prevention and control procedures, policies, and protocols.
9. Ensure all procedures are performed according to established standards of care and within the RN scope of practice.
10. Demonstrate competency in required clinical procedures and equipment use in accordance with facility guidelines.
11. Investigate, report, and communicate unusual occurrences, safety concerns, and patient-care incidents as required.

Collaboration, Education, and Advocacy

1. Collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, case managers, social workers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient-centered care.
2. Communicate assessment findings, changes in patient status, care priorities, and discharge or transition needs to the interdisciplinary team.
3. Provide compassionate psychosocial support to critically ill patients and their families.
4. Deliver health education, treatment information, and medication instructions to patients and next of kin, using language and methods appropriate to their needs.
5. Act as a patient advocate by supporting patient rights, dignity, safety, informed decision-making, and quality care.

Evaluation

1. Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions and patient response to treatment.
2. Revise and update the patient’s plan of care based on clinical evaluation, patient progress, expected outcomes, and collaboration with the healthcare team.

Required Qualifications

1. Active, unrestricted New York State Registered Nurse (RN) License
2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
3. Current BLS certification required
4. Current ACLS certification required
5. Strong verbal and written English communication skills
6. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity clinical environment
7. Ability to collaborate professionally with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members
8. Must be willing to work a 3x12-hour schedule
9. Must be willing and able to float to the Emergency Department (ED) based on operational and patient-care needs

Preferred Qualifications

1. Two or more years of Critical Care nursing experience preferred
2. Experience caring for ICU, telemetry, medical-surgical, and high-acuity adult patients
3. Master’s Degree in Nursing preferred
4. Previous experience responding to rapid-response events, Code Blue activations, and medical emergencies

This position requires the ability to perform essential nursing functions, including:

1. Standing, walking, sitting, bending, talking, and hearing for extended periods
2. Performing repetitive movements as needed during patient care activities
3. Safely assisting with patient mobility and other direct-care responsibilities
4. Working in a fast-paced clinical environment with critically ill patients
